Josie Dolan, a 15-year-old from Phoenix, is making waves in the world of para-swimming. With her determination and talent, she has already broken several national records and is now setting her sights on the 2028 Paralympics. Josie's love for the water began at a young age. Her parents, recognizing her early affinity for swimming, enrolled her in the Hubbard Swim School and later the Scottsdale Aquatic Club. However, it wasn't until she was diagnosed with spastic hemiplegia cerebral palsy that her path to becoming a para-swimmer began to unfold.
Her mother, Leigh Ann Dolan, recalls the early signs of Josie's condition, which were often dismissed by pediatricians. Josie walked later than her peers, fell frequently, and struggled with fine motor skills. It wasn't until she was 9 that the family received a proper diagnosis, and even then, the pandemic delayed further understanding of her condition.
Despite the challenges, Josie's passion for swimming remained unwavering. Her coach, Laurel Hill, played a pivotal role in tailoring her training to accommodate her disability. Hill focused on improving Josie's breast stroke technique, addressing the issue of her leg's positioning in space, which had previously led to disqualifications.
The results of their collaboration are impressive. Josie has broken three national para-swimming records in breaststroke this year, and her coach believes she is on track for the 2028 Paralympics.
